A Laundry List of Towns We’ve Called “Home”?

It must have been two or three nights ago, I was driving the Tacoma home after work and I started humming along to this hip hop country song or was it a cover by a hip hop artist singing a country song.? When I finally realized it was a remix of a country beat with an R&B beat while the artist used a bunch of dance moves from back in the day. Of course I couldn’t join the “hoedown” dance party, and instead just nodded my head to the tight beats and tapped my fingers across the steering wheel as I continued onward…

  • Slide to the left, slide to the right
  • Now cool down, have a good time
  • Slide to the left, slide to the right
  • Do the butterfly and have a good time
  • ‘Round, ’round, ’round and ’round you go
  • It’s time to show out right now and take it to the floorGon’ and do the 2 step then cowboy boogie
  • Grab your sweetheart and spin out with ’em
  • Do the hoedown and get into it (whoo, whoo, whoo)
  • Take it to the left now and dip with it
  • Gon’ throw down, take a sip with it
  • Now lean back put your hips in it (whoo, whoo, whoo)

Afterwards I started thinking about all the places I had driven through over the course of my lifetime and for some reason a list started populating in my mind. It was a list of all of the towns, cities and countries I have ever lived in. Then I wondered if it would be possible to even remember all of this when I got home?

Sitting down with a pen and paper the words just started popping into my head about where I had been, the places I had seen and traveled to. Drawing out a map of the various states, provinces then countries. The pen skipped back and forth across the paper. Soon it looked like a brainstorming map. That’s when I knew it had to be a list. This mess was getting more and more difficult to decipher.

Each entry made the list longer. Each one had its own happy stories, triumphs and torn reasons as to why we had departed, when we had departed and where that next journey took this soul. It was disturbing as the list grew past 15 and continued down, down, down on the paper.

Laughing I wondered what other lists I should compose later on?

Perhaps a list of all places I had worked at since I was 16-years old? Or maybe a list of all the best places that I have ever travelled to? Or maybe a list of the worst places? Or perhaps just a list of lists until there were no more items to place on a list?

A List of Every Town, City, State/Province/Prefecture and Country…

When writing and reading back through this list, it feels like there should be soooo-oooo many more! Then I realize these are only the towns and cities where I have lived and not ALL of the ones I have traveled to, visited, driven through or flown over top of. Sitting here in the comfort of my condo reading through this list, thinking back through the plethora of stories and experiences I can only wonder what the next 50-ish years has in store, for this story teller?
